Welcome Friends!
Hi friends! Welcome to my blog! I’m excited to share a piece of my world on here, and hope to connect, inspire, and inform. You can expect to see paleo-ish recipes, the lowdown on my favorite supplements and foods, holistic health info, mindfulness exercises, and a bit about me too.
For those of you who don’t know me, I am a Family Medicine Physician in Austin, Texas. I practice with an integrative approach and have training in functional medicine and the osteopathic fascial distortion model. I’ll talk more about those later. I grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, attended medical school in Blacksburg, Virginia, and residency brought me to sunny Texas, where I met my husband and started a family.
Some random personal tid-bits: I love dogs and always have. If I come to your house and you have dogs, I might pay more attention to them than you, sorry. However, the skunk is my spirit animal, and I will share why soon. My husband and I watch Jeopardy on the regular. We actually watch a lot of shows, but try to balance it with days of hard work and lots of movement. But, when someone asked me what my hobbies are recently, I considered telling them Netflix. Really. That and sleeping seem like pretty good hobbies for a working mama. I do love to read though, and have stacks of books in a couple of spots. I usually have a few going at once, and occasionally finish a whole book. My vice is coffee. The smell, the taste, all of it. I know my limits on caffeine, so I have to really savor that one cup every morning. It is a treasured ritual. I limit dairy, so I drink it black now, but add half and half and whip cream whenever we are on vacation. Balance, right? I love to cook and think I’m pretty good at it. Music is a big part of my life. I’ll keep a fresh mix on here through Spotify. Keep your eye out for specifically tailored mixes on my recipe posts. I’m fascinated with intuition and the combining of western and eastern medicine.
Speaking of intuition, I’d like to share an exercise that I use when making decisions, big or small. An example of a big time I used this practice is when I was choosing a medical specialty. In the beginning I was set on becoming a pediatrician, then switched to Ob/Gyn for a while. Followed by family medicine with an integrative focus. At one point, I was distressed and torn and decided to try a deep visualization. I visualized three doors and a representation of a separate specialty behind each door. The first was a parent and their small child, with the child as the patient. The second was a typical ob/gyn visit with possible surgery (you should actually try to visualize all parts, including the feel of being in the OR, in this case), and the third was a mom and teenage daughter, both were patients. The exercise is to not overthink about which door you want to open and why, it is to try to just gravitate to the one that is pulling you in. To just tune into yourself and your intuition and see which one you reach out for, and watch how it makes you feel. I reached for the mom and daughter patient combo, and that is what I am still doing today, and I love it. This was a big one, but I do it with food order choices all the time. This is a good way to strengthen your intuition. I have a place that I order lunch from frequently, and I have two favorite dishes, the avocado toast and the fish tacos. Probably not hard to guess the restaurant if you follow my stories on instagram! When I can’t decide, I close my eyes and truly visualize each plate in front of me and see which one I reach for. It’s that first gut instinct that is your intuition trying to speak to you. It’s usually right, especially the more you practice. Try it out!
Well, there you have it…my first blog post! I’m gonna go celebrate with a half glass of wine. I mean, I want the resveratrol, but I don’t want to overdo the yeast, ya know? More on that soon, stay tuned. Thanks for stopping by!! xoxo
